The S.S. Cartela is the only Tasmanian River Steamer still afloat of the 80 or so similar vessels that once called southern Tasmania home.
The restoration is a project of huge significance - not only for those who have played a role in her story to date, but also for those who will become part of her yet unwritten history from this day forward.
Our vision is to see her fully restored and recommissioned, ferrying passengers under steam power, on the river that she has called home for over a hundred years.
We believe that the success of this project will have repercussions well beyond the world of heritage vessel enthusiasts. We believe S.S.Cartela will once again contribute to the story of Hobart, it’s people and it’s economy. We see Cartela playing an important role in the world class tourism experiences that have made Tasmania famous.
We aim to highlight the historical and cultural worth of this unique vessel and in turn hope that others can share in the vision of returning S.S.Cartela to her scenic environment as an authentic heritage steamship displaying the best that Tasmania can offer. The restoration project will provide unique training opportunities to ensure the preservation of Australia's rich and extensive maritime heritage for the next generation to enjoy. It is thanks to this training and heritage focus, that SteamShip Cartela Trust has been granted Deductible Gift Recipient status by the Australian Tax Office, so that your donation will be Tax deductible.
